White Blood Cells Neutrophils: Engulf bacteria and
cellular debris. Lymphocytes:
Produce antibodies and regulate immune response. Monocytes: Associated with engulfing cellular debris, antigen processing. Eosinophils: Associated with parasitic
infection and allergic response. Basophils:
Associated with hypersensitivity and release histamine.
|
There are three types of granulocytes. Note how the intra-cellular granules are visible in the cytoplasm.
- Cool!

An eosinophil.

A basophil with lobed nuclei.

<-- This white cell
is called a lymphocyte, and its function is to produce antibodies
against invading microorganisms. (It
is a smaller White Blood Cell ~ think Lymphocyte Little.)
This white cell is called
a phagocyte, and its function is to eat/consume/engulf
and destroy invading microorganisms. (Think Pac Man!) -->

This sample has a white blood cell count of 7,000 white blood cells per cubic millimeter. This is
within the normal range for an adult male. White blood cells remain at a normal
level in a healthy person.
|
This sample has a white blood cell count of 13,000 white blood cells per cubic millimeter. This
is above the normal range for an adult male and indicates that there is an infection in the body. Something very serious like cancer or other less serious infections
such as bronchitis could cause this increase in white blood cells.
